ANA is a non-EU airline. However, British and European regulations still protect your rights to flight compensation in specific situations.
To claim ANA flight compensation, your delayed or cancelled flight must have departed from a European airport.
Unfortunately, when flying to the UK/EU on an airline based outside of the UK/EU, your passenger rights are not protected by the UK/EU legislation (see table below).
|Type of flight||Example||Compensation|
|Flying with a British carrier||Tokyo to London with British Airways||Yes|
|Flying with a EU carrier||Amsterdam to London with KLM||Yes|
|Flying with a non-UK/non-EU carrier from the UK||London to Tokyo with Japan Airlines||Yes|
|Flying with a non-UK/non-EU carrier to the UK||Tokyo to London with Japan Airlines||No|
You could be eligible to receive flight compensation if:
Your ANA flight was departing from a European airport
It was delayed by more than 3 hours
However, note that you can only claim compensation if the airline was at fault for the delay. See the "Extraordinary Circumstances” section of this article for more information.
Check now if you are eligible for ANA compensation with our no-obligation Claim Calculator. If you are eligible, our team will handle the entire claim process on your behalf. We will even defend your rights in court to get you your deserved money. We have over 10 years of experience and a legal success rate of 95%! No win, no fee.
Depending on the situation behind your ANA flight's cancellation, you may be entitled to flight compensation, a refund, or both!
You can claim flight compensation for a cancelled ANA flight if it was cancelled less than 14 days before the original departure date*.
Note that ANA must be the party responsible for the cancellation. For more information on when the airline can refuse to pay compensation, see the "Extraordinary Circumstances" section below.
*The right to compensation for ANA flights applies only to flights departing from European airports.
If your ANA flight was cancelled, you could be eligible to request a refund if the following conditions are met (see the table below for more information):
|Cancellation notice||Alternative flight||Compensation|
|Fewer than 7 days in advance||Departs 1h+ earlier or arrived 2h+ later||Yes|
|7-14 days in advance||Departs 2h+ earlier or arrived 4h+ later||Yes|
|Fewer than 14 days in advance||No alternative flight offered||Yes + refund|
The airline did not provide you with an alternative flight,
You were offered an alternative flight but decided not to take it
The amount of flight compensation depends on the distance of your flight and is per passenger:
|Distance of your flight||Compensation|
|Flights shorter than 1,500 km||Get £220 per passenger|
|Flight between 1,500 and 3,500 km||Get £350 per passenger|
|Flights of over 1,500 kilometres within the EU||Get £350 per passenger|
|Flights of over 3,500 kilometres outside of the EU||Get £520 per passenger|
Even if your ANA flight was delayed by more than 3 hours or cancelled at the last minute, ANA could still deny you compensation. This could happen if the disruption was caused by a third party or force majeure. Such situations are referred to as extraordinary circumstances.
Some of the most common extraordinary circumstances are:
Bad weather conditions, such as thick fog, heavy rain, or thunderstorms.
A strike, most often specifically within the aviation industry (for example, a strike of air traffic control workers at a specific airport).
However, a strike of the airline's crew is not considered an extraordinary circumstance!
Political circumstances, such as a terrorist attack or general security risk due to political unrest.
Natural disasters, including volcanic eruptions and hurricanes.
A collision between the aircraft and birds or other foreign objects.
An ill or unruly passenger.
Flight delays caused by the airport staff, such as extraordinarily long queues to security checks.
It is possible that ANA falsely claims that an extraordinary circumstance occurred! They do this to avoid having to pay compensation.
Did your ANA flight depart from the UK? Then you can claim for up to 6 years after your flight.
However, if you were leaving from another European country, different time limits would apply to your flight:
The law of the country of origin
The law of the destination country
The law of the country in which the airline is based
