New fuel efficiency record set by Lufthansa Group

Wednesday, August 1, 2018

The group, conformed by the following airlines: Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Swiss International Air Lines, Brussels Airlines and Eurowings, has released their Sustainability Report for 2017. In the aforementioned document, the corporation establishes that they have set a new record for fuel efficiency.

During 2017, all of the abovementioned airlines contributed to achieving an average of 3.68 kerosene litres required to transport a passenger 100 kilometres. This consists of a 4.5 percent improvement in comparison with the previous year. It is particularly impressive when you take into account that the industry target of annual efficiency gains sits at 1.5 percent.

Carsten Spohr, CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, stated that “This is the welcome result of our continuous fleet modernization and efficiency programs. To make our operations as environmentally friendly as possible, we will continue to invest in economic, fuel-efficient and quiet aircraft. We also want to take a leading role within our industry in the important area of sustainability”

The improvement achieved by Lufthansa Group gives hope that the air travel industry’s recent growth will not necessarily mean greater damage to the environment. Furthermore, the amount of unused kerosene reached the whooping figure of 25.5 million litres; relatively the amount of fuel needed to operate the return route London – New York 250 times. It amounts to around 64,400 tons of CO2 emissions. We can fairly say that we welcome such news.
