American teen survives trip in landing gear of jet

Tuesday, April 22, 2014

An American teenager hid in the landing gear of an aircraft and flew from California to Hawaii.

The 16-year-old boy had snuck into the plane in San Jose and survived the 5-hour flight, miraculously without injury. However, he didn't enjoy the tropical island for very long; he was arrested at the airport on Maui, when he suddenly appeared from his hiding.

Most stowaways who hide in the landing gear of an aircraft are at danger, for instance from lack of oxygen. Some even die during the flight or landing. The extremely low temperatures can cause death; there is the risk of being crushed by the tires, and one could simply fall out. This unfortunately happened to a minor, who was killed in 2010.

Hawaiian Airlines contacted the FBI regarding the teenager. The boy's identity remains unknown.
