Although Switzerland is not a member of the European Union, it has adopted some EU regulations in order to participate in the European Single Market. The Flight Compensation Regulation, also known as EU261 or — more formally — Regulation (EC) No. 261/2004, is one of these regulations.
Compensation for a delayed Sunweb flight is awarded if the passenger arrives at their final destination at least 3 hours late and the delay is the airline's fault, according to the Flight Compensation Regulation (you have to consider the so-called extraordinary circumstances).
The amount of compensation is per passenger and depends on the distance of your flight:
|Distance of your flight||Compensation|
|Flights shorter than 1,500 km||Get £220 per passenger|
|Flight between 1,500 and 3,500 km||Get £350 per passenger|
|Flights of over 1,500 kilometres within the EU||Get £350 per passenger|
|Flights of over 3,500 kilometres outside of the EU||Get £520 per passenger|
If your flight was cancelled and you did not take any of the airline's alternative flights, you may be eligible for a refund from Sunweb. If the airline did not offer you an alternative flight, you are also entitled to a refund.
Additionally, the cancellation must be the fault of the airline itself. If extraordinary circumstances occur, such as travel restrictions at your destination, or an especially bad weather, preventing the flight from taking off, the airline is not obliged to pay you compensation.
Did you experience a Sunweb cancelled flight? You might be eligible for flight compensation, a full monetary refund, or even both!
|Cancellation notice||Alternative flight||Compensation|
|Fewer than 7 days in advance||Departs 1h+ earlier or arrived 2h+ later||Yes|
|7-14 days in advance||Departs 2h+ earlier or arrived 4h+ later||Yes|
|Fewer than 14 days in advance||No alternative flight offered||Yes + refund|
Instead of a monetary refund, airlines will sometimes offer passengers vouchers. We don't recommend accepting them. Accepting a voucher has a number of drawbacks, including:
- If you accept a travel voucher, you must use the same airline again, even if you had a bad experience with it previously.
- Most airline vouchers have strict expiration dates. This forces you to make new travel plans quickly.
- If the airline declares bankruptcy, you might be unable to exchange your voucher for a refund, and you will simply lose your money.
Have you already accepted a voucher from Sunweb? We might be able to help you to exchange it for a full monetary refund. Use our easy-to-use online system to provide us with all the details regarding your flight and our experts will look into your case. No win, no fee.
I have incurred unexpected expenses due to my Sunweb flight being delayed/cancelled. Can I ask for reimbursement?
You certainly can. If you had to stay in a hotel, take a taxi, or eat at an airport restaurant due to a flight delay, you may be able to get these expenses reimbursed.
If you decide to use Flight-Delayed.co.uk to submit your Sunweb claim, you can easily upload all relevant invoices and receipts to our smart, mobile-friendly system. We will carefully review them and fight the airline for your money. We work on a 'no win, no fee' basis for your convenience.
The term "extraordinary circumstances" refers to situations in which the flight disruption is caused by a third party or force majeure and is thus not the airline's fault. Even if your flight was significantly delayed or cancelled unexpectedly, you may not be entitled to compensation in these circumstances.
The following are some of the most common extraordinary circumstances:
Bad weather conditions, such as thick fog, heavy rain, or thunderstorms.
A strike, most often specifically within the aviation industry (for example, a strike of air traffic control workers at a specific airport).
However, a strike of the airline's crew is not considered an extraordinary circumstance!
Political circumstances, such as a terrorist attack or general security risk due to political unrest.
Natural disasters, including volcanic eruptions and hurricanes.
A collision between the aircraft and birds or other foreign objects.
An ill or unruly passenger.
Flight delays caused by the airport staff, such as extraordinarily long queues to security checks.
You should be aware, however, that airlines may attempt to avoid paying out compensation by claiming extraordinary circumstances occurred, even if this was not the case.
Make sure the airline is held accountable by submitting your claim with Flight-Delayed.co.uk. Our expert will thoroughly examine your case and fight for your rights — even in court if necessary. For your convenience, we only work on a "no win, no fee" basis.
