Ryanair strike in Belgium — get compensated for your cancelled flight
Wednesday, April 20, 2022
As announced by CNE and ACV Puls unions, the Belgian cabin crew of Ryanair will go on strike from Friday 22nd to Sunday 24th of April. Passengers affected by the strike are eligible for compensation for their cancelled and delayed flights.
According to the union, Ryanair has failed to comply with the demands of the Belgian workers. Some of the complaints include:
Lack of Ryanair HR personnel in Belgium
Low salaries — The union says 75% of on-board personnel receive the minimum wage for the sector.
Lacking benefits for certain groups of employees — For example, as Hans Elsen from the ACV union says: “Some staff members, for example those who are no longer allowed to fly due to pregnancy, have been without wages or benefits for months.”
The strike will affect passengers flying to and from two Belgian airports: Brussels Airport and Brussels South Charleroi Airport.
Passengers are entitled to compensation
If you have been affected by the strike (for example, your Ryanair flight has been cancelled or delayed), you can likely claim Ryanair compensation of up to 600 euro. The exact amount depends on the distance of the flight.
For flights shorter than 1,500 km, the compensation is €250.
For flights between 1,500 and 3,500 km, the compensation is €400.
For flights of over 1,500 kilometres within the EU, the compensation is also €400.
For flights of over 3,500 kilometres outside of the EU, the compensation is €600 —but if your flight was delayed by fewer than 4 hours, the total amount might be reduced by 50%.
