Vueling cabin crew back on strike — how long will it last and who will be affected?
Wednesday, October 26, 2022
Following disagreements in negotiations with the airline, the Union of Airline Flight Attendants (STAVLA), has called for a three-month strike of Vueling’s cabin crew. Flight delays and cancellations will likely affect tens of thousands of passengers travelling with the low-cost airline.
Vueling strikes — what is happening?
Vueling has announced new cabin crew strikes on Fridays, Sundays and Mondays in November, December and January, as well as walkouts on specific days: November 1st, 6th, 8th, 24th, and 31st, and January 5th, 2023.
The union has announced that strikes will continue until the airline is ready to negotiate a wage improvement for its workers. They claim that Vueling is dragging its feet in negotiating collective bargaining and in the meantime, cabin crew in Spain remain in precarious employment situations.
Over the summer, Vueling agreed to a 6.5% wage increase with another union. However, STAVLA claims that this is not enough and demands the wage to be increased by 13.4% this year.
What should I do if my flight is delayed or cancelled due to Vueling strikes?
The European regulation EU261 — as well as its British equivalent — protects your rights as an air passenger. In the event of a strike called by the airline's cabin crew, the airline is considered to be the party at fault and therefore, passengers are entitled to flight compensation.
- If your flight was delayed by more than 3 hours, you are entitled to compensation of up to £520 per passenger.
- If your flight was cancelled less than 14 days before the scheduled departure, you may also be entitled for flight compensation.
- If your flight gets cancelled and the airline doesn’t offer you an alternative flight OR you don’t accept the alternative flight offered, you can also claim a full monetary refund.
The amount of flight compensation depends on the distance of your flight:
