What to do in case of damaged luggage?

Fill in a Property Irregularity Report to report your complaint. Within seven days after you have received your luggage you have to report the damage. Submit the complaint in writing and attach the Property Irregularity Report. Airlines are responsible for damaged-, delayed- and lost luggage. The Regulation of Montreal and the Regulation of Warsaw are the applicable laws to which airlines will refer.  Airlines have to compensate you with maximum of about 900 GBP /  EUR 1,000,- This is calculated per day in SDR; a currency that is based on several international currencies.

Note that when there is a difference in the carrier that operated your flight and the contracting air carrier, you have to report the damaged luggage with both airlines.

Aside from claiming the damage with the airline, most people are insured through their travel insurance. Check the insurance policy. Most insurance companies have an online form to report the damage.
In most cases it is recommendable to declare the damage of your luggage at the insurance company because usually the compensation of the airline does not meet the costs of the damage.

Did you book a package? Then make the tour operator liable. The tour operator is responsible for the execution of your trip and this includes the transportation of your luggage. When your tour operator is a member of the ABTA then check the terms & conditions if the tour operator is liable or not.
