What are your rights when your baggage is lost?

The airline has to pay you up to a maximum of ± 900 pounds (calculated per day). When your baggage is lost first ask a representative of the airline for the Property Irregularity Report. On this declaration form you can fill out all the relevant information about you lost luggage and other specific information. The airline will also check the ‘World tracer’ to search for the baggage you lost. With this system it’s possible to ‘track and trace’ and hopefully see where it went wrong. Every airline all over the world uses this system.

Important: the Property Irregularity Report needs to be filled in within five days. You can also fill out the form online, which has be done within two days.

Did the airline find your baggage? Then they have to deliver this for free at your home address or at you accommodation. When the baggage is not found after three days we advise you to contact the airline and fill in a Baggage Inventory Form (BIF). Don’t forget to do this within 21 days after the date of your arrival. Never let the airline turn you down by letting you think this is pure an insurance question. The airline is responsible for your baggage. With a maximum of about 900 pounds an airline has to compensate you for the lost baggage.

The airline is not responsible for the loss of money, jewellery, silverwork, business documents, samples, electronic equipment or other highly valuable products. Your compensation is calculated per day in SDR; a currency that is based on several international currencies.

Aside from the compensation from the airline for your lost baggage you can make a declaration at your insurance company. Was the lost baggage worth more than what the airline paid then please contact your insurance company. To the extent you are insured the coverage could be a few thousand pounds.

Every day, 90,000 pieces of baggage are misplaced on airports worldwide, 10,000 of which in Europe. 50% of these incidents are a result of transfers, amounting to 30 to 40 million pieces. One out of 3,000 will never be found again. For this reason, more and more people only travel with hand luggage. These figures on lost luggage are published by the European Commission. They researched the matter in 2009, after alarming reports of these massive losses of luggage every year..
