Did you take an EL AL flight from the United Kingdom or Europe? Because EL AL is a non-EU airline, British and EU laws only protect your right to compensation for EL AL flights leaving the UK/EU.
Unfortunately, when flying to the UK/EU on a non-EU airline, your passengers' rights are not protected under British and European flight compensation regulations.
More information on when you may be entitled to flight compensation can be found in the table below.
If your EL AL flight from the United Kingdom or Europe was delayed by more than 3 hours, you are entitled to flight compensation under British and European flight compensation regulations. The airline must be the party responsible for the disruption.
Depending on the reasons and circumstances surrounding your EL AL flight cancellation, you may be entitled to up to £520 in compensation, a ticket refund, or both.
If your affected flight departed from the United Kingdom or the European Union, you might be entitled to compensation.
Furthermore, your EL AL flight must have been cancelled less than 14 days prior to the original departure date in order for you to be eligible for cancelled flight compensation.
Even if you meet both criteria, the airline may still refuse to compensate you. More information on denied claims can be found in the "Extraordinary Circumstances" section of this article.
If your EL AL flight from the UK/EU was cancelled, you may be eligible for a refund if:
the airline did not offer you an alternative flight,
the airline did offer you an alternate flight, which you declined.
You might get £520 in flight compensation for your delayed or cancelled EL AL flight.
Claim compensation online in just a few minutes!
The distance of your flight determines the amount of compensation:
For flights shorter than 1,500 km, the compensation is £220.
For flights between 1,500 and 3,500 km, the compensation is £350.
For flights of over 1,500 kilometres within the EU, the compensation is also £350.
For flights of over 3,500 kilometres outside of the EU, the compensation is £520 —but if your flight was delayed by fewer than 4 hours, the total amount might be reduced by 50%.
When a third party or force majeure causes a delay or cancellation, EL AL reserves the right to refuse compensation. These circumstances are known as extraordinary circumstances.
Some of the most common extraordinary circumstances are:
Bad weather conditions, such as thick fog, heavy rain, or thunderstorms.
A strike, most often specifically within the aviation industry (for example, a strike of air traffic control workers at a specific airport).
However, a strike of the airline's crew is not considered an extraordinary circumstance!
Political circumstances, such as a terrorist attack or general security risk due to political unrest.
Natural disasters, including volcanic eruptions and hurricanes.
A collision between the aircraft and birds or other foreign objects.
An ill or unruly passenger.
Flight delays caused by the airport staff, such as extraordinarily long queues to security checks.
However, keep in mind that airlines may claim that an extraordinary circumstance occurred, even if this was not the case. They do this in the hope of avoiding having to pay you compensation.
If you flew from the United Kingdom, you have 6 years to claim flight compensation and a refund. The only exception is Scotland, where you have 5 years to submit a claim.
Maximise your chance of a successful EL AL claim.
