Did your Air Cairo flight depart from the UK or the EU? Then you are likely entitled to compensation, if your flight was delayed or cancelled.
Unfortunately, if the flight disruption happened on your flight back to the UK/EU, you are not eligible for compensation. See table below for more information.
|Type of flight||Example||Compensation|
|Flying with a British carrier||Tokyo to London with British Airways||Yes|
|Flying with a EU carrier||Amsterdam to London with KLM||Yes|
|Flying with a non-UK/non-EU carrier from the UK||London to Tokyo with Japan Airlines||Yes|
|Flying with a non-UK/non-EU carrier to the UK||Tokyo to London with Japan Airlines||No|
Depending on the exact circumstances surrounding your Air Cairo flight cancellation, you may be entitled to compensation of up to £520, a ticket refund, or both.
You can claim flight compensation if your flight was cancelled at the last minute (fewer than 14 days prior to the original departure date).
This only applies to flights departing from the UK/EU.
/!\ To be considered: even if you meet the above criteria, the airline may rightfully deny you compensation in some cases. See the "Extraordinary Circumstances" section of this article for more information on such situations.
If your Air Cairo flight from the EU was cancelled, you may be eligible for a refund if:
The airline did not provide you with an alternative flight.
The airline did offer you an alternative flight, but you declined the offer.
|Cancellation notice||Alternative flight||Compensation|
|Fewer than 7 days in advance||Departs 1h+ earlier or arrived 2h+ later||Yes|
|7-14 days in advance||Departs 2h+ earlier or arrived 4h+ later||Yes|
|Fewer than 14 days in advance||No alternative flight offered||Yes + refund|
|Distance of your flight||Compensation|
|Flights shorter than 1,500 km||Get £220 per passenger|
|Flight between 1,500 and 3,500 km||Get £350 per passenger|
|Flights of over 1,500 kilometres within the EU||Get £350 per passenger|
|Flights of over 3,500 kilometres outside of the EU||Get £520 per passenger|
Sometimes, a delay or cancellation is not the fault of the airline but rather a third party or force majeure. These situations are referred to as extraordinary circumstances.
If one of the below options applies to your situation, the airline may rightfully deny you compensation.
Bad weather conditions, such as thick fog, heavy rain, or thunderstorms.
A strike, most often specifically within the aviation industry (for example, a strike of air traffic control workers at a specific airport).
However, a strike of the airline's crew is not considered an extraordinary circumstance!
Political circumstances, such as a terrorist attack or general security risk due to political unrest.
Natural disasters, including volcanic eruptions and hurricanes.
A collision between the aircraft and birds or other foreign objects.
An ill or unruly passenger.
Flight delays caused by the airport staff, such as extraordinarily long queues to security checks.
Be aware, though! Airlines can sometimes claim that an extraordinary circumstance occurred, even if this was not the case. They do this in order to avoid paying compensation.
As Air Cairo is a non-EU airline, the time limit will depend on the departure country. For instance, if you were leaving from France or Spain, you will have 5 years to claim, if you were leaving from Italy, you have 2 years to do so.
